Maned Wolf Height & Length
The omnivorous, crepuscular maned wolf has evolved to fit in with the open spaces of the South American savanna.
The maned wolf is the biggest canid in South America. The maned wolf looks so much like the long-legged fox that it is easy to confuse the two. One way to tell them apart from one another is by size.
Even though they belong to different genera, the maned wolf and other wolf types share some minor similarities.
That is, an adult Maned wolf stands 90 cm (35 in) tall on average. Additionally, the maned wolves can reach a body length of 3 to 4.5 feet (excluding the tail).
Maned Wolf Size | Length |
Male and female | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet |
Maned Wolf Weight
Maned wolves like other living species can be measured and looked at from different perspectives. While one of them is their average length, the other is their average weight or body mass.
Maned wolves are primarily solitary hunters and omnivorous eaters. Instead of only subsisting on meat and mammals, they eat seasonally abundant fruits and vegetables.
Although the maned wolves are not as insanely large as one of the largest wolves, they are pretty heavy and powerful. That is, an average maned wolf weighs about 20–30 kg (44–66 lb) when it is fully grown.
Maned Wolf Size | Weight |
Male and female | 20–30 kg (44–66 lb) |
Maned Wolf Pup Size
While the adult maned wolves are of the size mentioned above, have you ever wondered how large their young ones or pups are?
The average number of pups produced is 2.5, with a range of 1 to 5, and the gestation period is 65 days, according to research.
Furthermore, wolves are large dogs, and even the young ones can be pretty dangerous. The Maned wolf pups grow quickly until they weigh between 20–30 kg (44–66 lb) at one year old when they are fully grown.1

Maned Wolf Vs Great Dane Size Comparison
Maned wolves are taller, standing three feet at the shoulder, but some Great Danes are bigger and heavier than wolves.
That is, a large Great Dane can grow to be around 2.8 feet tall and about 3 feet long, whereas a large Maned Wolf can grow to be up to 3 feet tall and 4.5 feet long.
Additionally, in terms of their weight, the Great Danes are about 3 to 4 times much heavier than the Maned wolves.
So in a fight between the two species, it is pretty sure that the Great Dane has a greater advantage over the Maned wolf.
Animal type | Length | Weight |
Maned wolf | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet | 23 kg (51 pounds) |
Great Dane | Male: 30-34 inches (76-86 cm), Female: 28-32 inches (71-81 cm) | Male: 120-200 pounds (54-90 kg), Female: 100-130 pounds (45-59 kg) |
Maned Wolf Size Comparison To Human
If we look at the size of the Maned wolves with respect to our own, you would realize that we are pretty large than them.
This is because, while the average length of the Maned wolves is about 4 to 4.5 feet, the average human height is between 5.5 to 5.9 feet.
Additionally, we are also quite heavier than the maned wolves. For instance, while the weight of the Maned wolf is around 51 pounds, ours is about double 132-176 pounds.
However, wolves are pretty aggressive and have a very powerful bite. So although we are larger and heavier, they are quite powerful and can take over us.
Animal type | Length | Weight |
Maned wolf | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet | 23 kg (51 pounds) |
Average adult human | 5.5 to 5.9 feet | 60 to 80 kgs (132 pounds to 176 pounds |
Maned Wolf Vs Gray Wolf Size Comparison
In comparison to the Maned wolves, the Gray wolves are quite smaller and lighter. That is while the Gray timber wolves have an average length of about 4.5 to 6.5 feet, the Maned wolves can only reach up to 4.5 feet.
Also, in terms of their weight, the Gray timber wolf is about two times the weight of the Maned wolf.
Animal type | Length | Weight |
Maned wolf | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet | 23 kg (51 pounds) |
Gray Timber Wolf | Height: 2.6-3 feet Length: 4-6 feet | Male: 70 to 110 pounds Female: 50 to 85 pounds |
Maned Wolf Vs Jaguar Size Comparison
Jaguars are quite large and aggressive animals that are known for their size. After lions and tigers, jaguars are the third largest cats in the world.
They are quite powerful, so if there is a one-to-one fight between a wolf and a jaguar it is for sure that the jaguar would easily defeat the wolf. However, as wolves hunt in a pack, in a group it could be difficult for the jaguar to take over.
In terms of their size difference, while the Maned wolf is about 4.5 in terms of length and about 50 pounds in weight, the jaguar is 6 ft in length and 348 pounds in weight. The jaguar is tremendously larger and heavier than the Maned wolf.
Animal type | Length | Weight |
Maned wolf | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet | 23 kg (51 pounds) |
Jaguar | Height: 2.2-2.5 ft | 158 kg (348 lb) |
Maned wolf vs Coyote size comparison
Unlike the earlier comparisons, here is a comparison between two species that are almost of the same size, the Maned wolf and the Coyote.
The tallest canid in the wild is the maned wolf. The coyote, on the other hand, is almost the same size as a maned wolf, weighing about 20-50 pounds and standing about 4.3 feet tall.
Animal type | Length | Weight |
Maned wolf | Shoulder height: 90 cm (35 in) Body length: 4-4.5 feet | 23 kg (51 pounds) |
Coyote | Shoulder Height: 60 cm (24 inches) Body length: 1–1.3 meters (3.3–4.3 feet) | 9–23 kg (20–50 pounds) |
