Joro Spider Size Explained & Compared With Other Spiders

Tricho Nephila Clavata, also known as the Joro spider, is a genus of spiders. The Joro spider can bite humans and pets, but it has small mouth parts and is not aggressive, like all orb-weavers. Because of their small mouth parts, Joro has been deemed harmless and doesn’t pose a health risk. They’re actually quite beneficial because they eat harmful insects.

It is a large spider that can grow to be up to 10 cm wide. Female Joro spiders range in size from 0.66 to 0.98 inches (1.7 – 2.5 cm), while males range in size from 0.27 to 0.39 inches (0.70 – 1 cm).

The female Joro spiders are quite larger than their male counterparts. Female Joro spiders with leg spans of 3 to 4 inches have even been discovered in the state of Georgia (7.62 – 10.16 cm).

Surprisingly, in Georgia, the largest Joro spiders can grow to be three to four inches in diameter.

Joro Spider Weight

Talking about the size of these large spider species in terms of their weight, they are quite heavy compared to other small-sized spiders.

However, their weight is not really constant as it could vary depending on several factors such as gender (whether it is male or female), geographical location, lifestyle, and eating habits.

The average weight of the Joro spider is about 0.5 ounces. They are super lightweight species of spiders.1

Joro Spider Web Size

Joro spiders are enormous spiders that can grow to be three inches long or the size of a palm. Their legs and abdomens are brightly colored with yellow and black stripes. Their underbelly is red, and they spin massive golden webs the color of golden silk.

Moreover, Their webs can also be quite large, strung in both nearby trees or even across pathways, and the silk fibers must be sufficiently strong to support this larger web size.

Joro spiders hatch from eggs in the spring, mature over the summer, and reach full maturity in the late summer or fall. This is the time when they begin to look for suitable locations to mate and lay their eggs, and as a result, they build large webs.

Female spiders spin spherical and three-dimensional webs. You would be shocked to know that some of the spider webs could be as large as 10 feet wide!

Although the Joro spiders are relatively harmless to humans, and their bite is no more painful than a bee sting, the spider species is quite large.

Joro spiders have bright yellow and black stripes and can grow to be 3-4 inches long, almost the size of a person’s palm.

If we look at the average size of a human palm, is about 6-7 inches, and the Joro spiders can grow up to 3-4 inches in diameter.

And this makes the Joro spider quite similar to or a bit smaller than the average human palm. Insane, right?

In terms of banana spider and Joro spider size, females are significantly larger than males.

The Banana spider is not the same as the Joro spider, despite their similar appearance. They are large spiders with legs that can extend up to 3 inches. Joro spiders can almost reach adult human palm size.

Although the Joro spider is larger, including its leg span, the banana spider has a larger body. Joro spiders have bodies that are 0.7 in-1 inches long and weigh up to 0.5 ounces, but their overall length can reach 3-4 inches.

In contrast to the Banana spider, which has a body length of 0.25-3 inches, a leg span of 3-4 inches, and weighs approximately 0.2 ounces,

Spider type Body lengthLeg span Weight
Joro spider 0.7 in-1 inch3-4 inches 0.5 ounces

Joro Spider Vs Garden Spider Size Comparison

Moving on to size comparisons within its own species, the Joro spider is compared to the Garden spider.

The garden spider is one of the largest spider species found in the UK. The black-and-yellow garden spider is a large but harmless spider.

The distinct webs of the Joro spider and the Garden spider are one of the easiest ways to tell them apart.

Garden Spiders spin massive, circular webs in gardens and grasslands. The Garden spider is about 1 inch long with a 3-inch leg span and weighs about  0.0017 ounces.

On the other hand, the Joro spiders have a body length of 0.7 in-1 inches long and weigh up to 0.5 ounces, but they can grow to be 3-4 inches long overall.

Spider type Body lengthLeg span Weight
Joro spider 0.7 in-1 inch3-4 inches 0.5 ounces
Garden spider 1 inch 3 inches 0.0017
