Hobo Spider Length
Tegenaria Agrestis, also known as the hobo spider, is a recently introduced species to the United States and Canada, having traveled from Europe to the Pacific Northwest. The Hobo Spider is distinguished by a chevron pattern on the abdomen, “boxing glove” shaped palps in front of the body, and a funnel-shaped web.
Male hobo spiders are 7-13.5 mm (9/32-9/16 in) in body length and female hobo spiders are 9.5-16.5 mm (3/8-5/8 in) in body length.
Overall the female Hobo spiders are larger than the male ones. Hobo spiders also have short hairs and legs with no distinct rings.
The Hobo spider’s leg span is about 1-2 inches. Males have enlarged pedipalps near the mouth that resemble short legs.
Furthermore, because they are so small, identifying a hobo spider necessitates the use of a microscope.
Hobo spider | Centimeter | Inches |
Body length | Male: 0.7-1.35 cmFemale: 0.95-1.65 cm | Male: 0.2-0.5 in female: 0.4-0.6 in |
Leg span | 2.54-5.08 cm | 1-2 in |
Hobo Spider Weight
Moving on to describing the weight of the Hobo spiders, they are very lightweight. The weight of the species is majorly affected by their diet.
Tegenaria Agrestis eats mostly small insects. Hobo spiders eat insects and other arachnids. They feed on housefires, ants, cockroaches, and a variety of other insects. Furthermore, because they do not climb to great heights, they are at ease eating whatever comes their way on the ground.
When they detect danger, Hobo spiders can run at a speed of 2.2 mph (3.5 kph) due to their lightweight body. The Hobo spiders weigh less than an ounce.
Hobo Spider Max And Average Size
The size of the Hobo spider is not constant, that is its size varies depending on several factors such as its diet, geographical location, etc.
However, if we look at its maximum and average size in terms of length then the male hobo spiders are 7-13.5 mm (9/32-9/16 ) in body length and female hobo spiders are 9.5-16.5 mm (3/8-5/8 ) in body length. And the Hobo spiders can only reach a body length of 15 millimeters (0.59 in).
Hobo Spider Size Comparison To Human Hands
As you know by now that the Hobo spiders are extremely small, so it is quite interesting to think how they would look on a human hand.
If we compare the size of the Hobo spiders with the length of an average human, the spider would be no longer than our nails.
On average, the length of an adult human is about 7.6 inches. On the other hand, the length of the Hobo spider is 0.2-0.5 inches in the case of males and 0.3-0.6 inches in the case of females.
Can you see the massive difference? The Hobo spider’s length is insanely small beside a human hand.
Hobo Spider Vs Wolf Spider Size Comparison
Next up, let’s compare the spider with other types of spiders such as the wolf spider. Wolf spiders are the spiders’ sprinters.
The vast majority of the thousands of species in this family do not spin webs but instead chase and pounce on their prey.
They are strong, agile hunters who live in leaf litter or burrows on the ground. Wolf spiders are a large spider family in terms of length and weight. They are undoubtedly larger than the tiny Hobo spiders.
Wolf spiders have shorter leg spans only measuring 2-3 inches. The Wolf spider is less than 10 to 35 mm (0.4 to 1.38 in) in length and weighs less than an ounce. On the other hand, the Hobo spider is very tiny, but they are quite similar in weight.
Spider type | Body length | Leg span | Weight |
Hobo spider | 0.2-0.6 inch | 1-2 inch | less than an ounce |
Wolf spider | 0.4-1.38 inch | 2-3 inch | less than an ounce |
Hobo Spider Vs Brown Recluse Size Comparison
Brown recluse spiders and hobo spiders can occasionally be mistaken for one another. Spiders with a bad reputation include hobo spiders and brown recluses.
Despite having the same coloration of brown, they are physically very different. Hobo spiders are roughly the size of a nickel when compared to other spiders. Compared to other spider species, they have shorter legs. On the other hand, adult brown recluse spiders are roughly the size of a U.S. quarter when their legs are fully extended.
For instance, small recluse spiders rarely reach a length of half an inch. The overall length of a brown recluse spider is 6 to 20 millimeters (0.24 to 0.79 in), and its leg span is roughly 2.5 cm (1 inch).
Their weight varies from 0.001 lbs to 0.001 lbs (0.45 grams). Although these are quite small, they are much larger compared to the Hobo spiders.
Spider type | Body length | Leg span | Weight |
Hobo spider | 0.2-0.6 inch | 1-2 inch | less than an ounce |
Brown Recluse | 0.24 to 0.79 inches | 1-inch | 0.016-ounce |
Hobo Spider Vs Garden Spider Size Comparison
One of the largest spiders in the UK is the garden spider. The sizable, harmless, black-and-yellow garden spider. In grasslands and gardens, it creates enormous circular webs.
The Garden spider has a leg span of three inches, measures about an inch long, and weighs about 0.0017 ounces.n
On the other hand, the length of the Hobo spider is 0.2-0.5 inches in the case of males and 0.3-0.6 inches in the case of females, and a weight of less than an ounce.
Spider type | Body length | Leg span | Weight |
Hobo spider | 0.2-0.6 inch | 1-2 inch | less than an ounce |
Garden spider | 1 inch | 3 inches | 0.0017 |
Hobo Spider Vs Grass Spider Size Comparison
The shape of the Hobo spider and the grass spider is one of the most important aspects that contribute to their striking resemblance. The legs of the spiders are both thin, and their bodies have few hairs.
Even though hobo spiders are typically a little smaller than grass spiders, it would be very difficult to instantly distinguish between the two.
Grass spiders can grow to a maximum body size (excluding legs) of about an inch, whereas the majority of hobo spiders can grow to a maximum size of about 1.5 inches.
Spider type | Body length | Leg span | Weight |
Hobo spider | 0.2-0.6 inch | 1-2 inch | less than an ounce |
Grass spider | 0.19 in | 2-3.9 in | 3-ounce |
Conclusion
And that was everything you need to know about the size of the Hobo spider. I hope this article was helpful enough and you got something valuable from it.
